Fish Friday in Gouyave

If you like to eat fish than Fish Friday in Gouyave is an activity that you will not want to miss while in Grenada.

This activity start just recently in September. Every Friday night starting at 7PM in Gouyave one of the streets is closed off and food vendors set up stalls selling everything fish under the sun: fried, grilled, stewed ... you name it. Every kind of fish found in the nearby sea: kingfish, swordfish, jacks, snapper, marlin, lobster ... its endless.

There are even unusual dishes such as fish pizza!

Lots of caribs too.

Entertainments is often provided by the Grenville drummers.

Its a wonderful part and only a short drive from St. George.

Have a great New Year, and keep up the good work.

Hi Latin Beauty,

If I were you, I would take a taxi or tour operator even if it's from St. George's or Grand Anse. I intend to do exactly that. The taxi driver will either wait for you or return whenever you say to pick you up. Tour operators have recently set up trips for every Friday evening and will pick you up at your hotel and return you for a reasonable fee.

Otherwise if you insist on driving:

1. You will have to watch your drink intake;

2. The drive at night is not the easiest thing even for a returning resident like you or me.

3. If you still insist, go very early and use one of the parking lots they set up, and then just lime about until it gets underway.

My best advice: Let the taxi man or tour operator do the driving. No worries later.

Hi Pam,

Your timing is perfect, there's an 'R' in the month. Sounds like a blast. I envy you.

We would all appreciate your review of what Fish Friday is like for new members and me, when you return home.

Are you taking Mandalay or Yankee Clipper this trip? If so, I hope you keep a diary for us forlorn freezers back home.

Re: Fish Friday in Gouyave

No Windjammer this time. Just 9 glorious days at Blue Horizons. There's a nice twist to our air arrangements this time. We still have to fly out of Boston on AA but, thanks to Jet Blue, we're flying back in to Portland on the return. Much nicer than traveling all day and then having to drive an hour and a half back from Boston. We're sure looking forward to this trip.

Any reports on the river tubing excursion yet? We may give that a go if it's still in operation.
Pam

Re: Fish Friday in Gouyave

Pam,

I will find out for you asap. I have heard that they are in operation, but you know Grenada as well as I do in that respect.

Grenada is a great place to spend 9 days or 39 days as I sometimes do. I wish that some of the members could spend extended vacations in Grenada and Carriacou. The islands are so fantastic when you are not rushed. There is so much to do, I never have enough time to do it all.

I took pictures of BH in January/February of this year, and they also gave me some that they had taken by Arnold Hopkin the owner/mgr. They are on our Photo Gallery on this site. Go to the main gallery and it is in alphabetical order.

Re: Fish Friday in Gouyave

Hi Wrigley32,

I came across an excerpt from a recent, great trip report by Bigbay as follows:
Quote:
On Friday, Mandoo drove a bus tour to Guayve for the fish fry. It was only $20 US per person; much cheaper than a cab would have been. We were dropped off at 7 pm and the bus left to return at 10 pm, which gave us plenty of time to eat, listen to the drummers, and explore the town. The food was good and there were plenty of vendors with different specialties. We would definitely recommend the garlic shrimp and noodles, lambi (conch) soup, shrimp kabobs, and the coconut cookies! The fried fish was good too. A drumming group performed and they were excellent. It was very festive with locals and tourists mingling.
For those wishing to read the full trip report, here is a link: http://www.grenadavisitorforum.com/f...read.php?t=601

I'm sure there would have to be a minimum number of passengers to get that low price (US$20 per person), but lots of tourists go there on Fridays for a good time and a good feed. Mandoo would probably set it all up for you.

Have a crabback or three for me.

Re: Fish Friday in Gouyave

Fish Friday is awesome. Not to be missed! There were lots of stalls with different food and drinks. Only shrimp, fish, lobster and sides - no meat allowed! Most prices were around 2EC. We loved the fish pizza, shrimp kabobs and lobster stir fry. The local ice cream was also yummy. There were lobsters too but we passed on those. We traveled there with Mandoo around 7 and left around 9 when it was starting to get really busy. This is a really fun local event.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. We have around 60+ folks coming in for the July 8th Yankee Clipper sail and have arranged for Mandoo to take a bunch of us to the fish fry. We can't wait to get down island!

Hi tomtoes,

I think you will have a fantastic time filling up on all that seafood and hoisting a few cool ones. And you won't have to worry about driving either...

Please, please let us know how the evening went?

I envy you. Enjoy!

Re: Fish Friday in Gouyave

We were at Fish Friday on 6/22. It was a great experience not to be missed. Local culture, music, food, etc.. My favorite were the shrimp kabobs & fish kabobs. The homemade ice cream was wonderful as well. Well worth the trip!
